Profile
Rie Akagi - is a presence that breaks down the prevailing image of "female flutist = classics".
She is known as only one such female flutist that, resorting to all techniques well trained up in classics, can deal with jazz, soul and even salsa,
needless to say contemporary, new age and healing musics.
Her agressiveness and capability are well recognized by such big name in salsa field as Tito Puente, Larry Harlow, Willie Colon who has made collaboration
with her so far. She also raised big storms of excitement with standing ovation at Concord Jazz Festival in San Francisco and at Jazz Plaza in Cuba. After
being delegated to Puerto Rico from the Agency of Cultural Affairs, she experienced a major breakthrough in the Caribbean region and is picked up in newspapers and TVs.
Actually, the 3 albums recorded in Puerto Rico got a great reputation and she did her 2nd Caribbean Tour in October, 2005. Following "Caribbean Flutes" including 2
works of duo with Michel Camilo, Grammy awarded pianist, she released in 2009, her 15th album "Flutes Jam featuring Rie Akagi".
Graduated from the Instrumental Music (Flute major), the Tokyo University of the Arts, and guest professor at the Conservatory of Puerto Rico.
